Joshua 1:9 "Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."
My birthday is October 4th.
Because of the time of the year, I tend to subconsciously associate things on the calendar with it: football; major league baseball playoffs; a full calendar of school events; and cooling temperatures – to name a few. I am guessing that you might have things that you associate with your birthday as well! I can’t imagine a world without “reflection”. No full moon on a clear night. No bathroom mirrors. No creative photo ops. And, no contemplative thoughts while pondering the past.
There was nothing special about the night that changed my life.
It was a typical winter evening in southern Michigan. The night was cold. The air crisp and frosty. Light snow was on the ground, but the roads were clear. It was 1973, and I was 18. January was coming to an end, but my second semester in Bible school was just beginning. The date was January 27th. In the summer of 1973, I needed a job. I wasn’t picky. In fact, I was willing to do just about anything. I had returned home after spending a year away at Bible school. I needed to regroup, make money, and build up my savings.
Through word of mouth, I heard that a local building contractor was hiring unskilled help for the summer. It paid fairly well, but the job site was 70 miles away. And, the job also involved some risk. Some would say, “The risk was significant”. But, I was young; game for most anything, and a bit naïve. Ever been driving on the one and only road to a destination, and suddenly, without warning, the road is blocked? It's closed! You think, No, no, no! This can't be happening. You're stymied. You're in a bit of a quandary. What seemed like a perfectly good way only a few moments earlier, isn't any longer. Since you are unable to drive any further, there's nothing to do, but to turn around and go back. Regroup. Sort out your options. And, start over.
I had just graduated from high school, and if ever in my young life there was a sure thing - this was it. It was hands-down, unequivocally, a "no-brainer". I had an inside lead on a job. I doubted that getting a job could be any easier. The road sure looked open. And I was giddy with hope and optimism. |
